JSX’s Bold Step: Ordering 300 Hybrid Energy Aircraft for Future Air Travel
Up to 300 hybrid energy aircraft that can carry up to 30 passengers have been ordered by the Dallas-based jet carrier JSX. Three manufacturers—Electra, Aura Aero, and Heart Aerospace—were given the orders.
With the order of up to 300 hybrid energy aircraft that can accommodate between nine and thirty passengers, the Dallas-based “hop on” jet carrier JSX is planning a step into the future.
The point-to-point plane service company, which operates from personal terminals and uses 50-seat jets to carry 30 or fewer passengers, would benefit greatly from this addition.
Orders for the gas-electric cross aircraft are placed with Electra, Aura Aero, and Heart Aerospace, three various manufacturers.
All of the jets are propeller aircraft that will be available in the upcoming years.
According to JSX CEO Alex Wilcox, the novel stable of aircraft will enable the company to reach smaller airports for local flying, giving it more access to markets that are underserved in places like Texas and California.
It’s more of a replacement for driving than it is for airplane travel, according to Wilcox.
JSX’s Next Frontier: Embracing Hybrid Energy Aircraft for Sustainable Air Travel
Currently, JSX runs 45 Embraer 135 and 145 jets with a range of 1,500 to 2,500 miles.
According to him, the new aircraft will use less fuel by about 50%, which will allow the company to reduce the cost of flying by 10 to 15% just by using less energy. Additionally, they are slower than the jet aircraft of the present generation.
JSX has strong orders from Electra for 32 jets and options for an additional 50. The nine-seat Electra aircraft can land and take off in less than 150 feet and has a range of about 500 coastal miles.
While many as 150 of Aura’s 19-seater Aero Era aircraft will be available for purchase. These aircraft can take off with an all-electric propulsion and travel about 900 miles. For the Aura Aero aircraft, JSX has 50 firm orders and 100 options.
Another 50 firm orders and 50 options for JSX’s 30 seat aircraft with a 500-mile range are included in its order with Heart Aerospace.
This is not JSX’s first attempt at a cross aircraft. The company placed orders with Zunum Aero, a company supported by Boeing, in 2018 for hybrid-to-electric planes, an aircraft design that could potentially travel 1, 000 miles. However, that business went out of business in 2019.
Innovating the Skies: Airlines’ Shift Towards Electric Aircraft and Automation
Other airlines, including American Airlines in Fort Worth and United in Chicago, have placed speculative orders for electric vehicle takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, but those designs are still in the works. Lately, DFW International Airport announced a collaboration with an air taxi manufacturer to test the idea.
According to Wilcox, potential technological advancements will allow any fresh aircraft with 19 or fewer passengers to operate without a flight attendant and any aircraft could do so in the future with only one pilot.
In order to operate a planned service without using TSA or having some of the same oversight as larger carriers like American and Dallas-based Southwest, JSX has previously infuriated the classic airline industry.
