UK : Heat pump applications surge after increase in Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants

Following the government’s increase in grant for installing a new heat pump to £7, 500, the number of applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has increased significantly.

After the government increased its Boiler Upgrade Scheme by 50 % for new heat pumps, making it one of the most generous programs in Europe, more families are choosing to replace fossil fuel boilers with cleaner alternatives.

In the first week following the grant uplift, there were 1, 150 new applications for the program, which is more than three times the regular weekly rate prior to the change.

New heat pump applications have continued to be nearly 60 % higher than the regular average over the next three weeks.

Applications for heat pumps are on the rise, and a new report outlining their advantages

New separate research confirming that heat pumps are usually rated as silent, with the majority of those surveyed saying they did not notice the sound, supports the rise in heat pump applications.

According to the review, complaints from neighbors are uncommon, and people are much more likely to hear local heat pumps and traffic noise than dog barking.

The great increase in applications through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, according to Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, “demonstrates not just the desire for heat pumps in this country but also that our approach to net zero works.”

We want more families to benefit from the cleaner heating and more secure bills that heat pumps have to offer, and today’s proof that they emit the least amount of noise is but another justification for switching.

The study of heat pump sound that was released today follows major advancements in lowering noise levels. According to the report, heat pumps are now very silent, emitting noises comparable to those of a gas boiler or refrigerator.

Sound experts conducted intensive research for the independent study, reviewing pre-existing data and speaking with homeowners, installers, manufacturers, business organizations, and local authority planning officers.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme: How Does It Operate?

Some homes now require total planning approval before installing heat pumps.

Nonetheless, the report suggests strengthening heat pump noise assessments carried out by installers to continue shielding the people from noise pollution, as well as changing planning regulations to make it simpler for households to install them under permitted development rights.

In next week’s Autumn Statement, the government declared that it would consider introducing innovative permitted development rights to end the blanket ban on heat pumps in England that are located a meter from property boundaries.

According to Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product @ Marketing Officer at Octopus Energy Group,” The Boiler Upgrade Scheme has previously done wonders to kickstart a budding heat pump industry and drive hundreds of millions of pounds of private sector investment in the UK.”

We’ve seen five times as many heat pump applications from our customers since the grant’s increase was announced, and we can also provide some installations for completely.

Customers can check to see if their home qualifies for GOV without having to apply for grants through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.
