Mayor Dorothy Trueman lauds SAMS as a pioneering initiative, showcasing Sunderland’s commitment to embracing cutting-edge technologies. Operator training and meticulous route mapping underscore the city’s dedication to safe autonomous operations. With three zero-emission shuttles serving key locations and a focus on 5G-powered intelligent transportation corridors, SAMS epitomizes smart city innovation. Supported by government grants and industry collaboration, the project underscores Sunderland’s leadership in connected and autonomous mobility. Chief Executive Patrick Melia expresses anticipation for the positive impacts of SAMS on industrial mobility and the city’s sustainable future. Join us as we embark on a journey towards smarter, more connected urban environments with SAMS at the forefront.
A New Era for Urban Mobility with Self-Driving Technology
The self-driving Sunderland Advanced Mobility Shuttle ( SAMS ) debut has the goal of revolutionizing city mobility.
SAMS, which lately arrived in Sunderland, has the potential to revolutionize how city residents and visitors use the city streets. This self-driving vehicle, which is scheduled to arrive on the roads this spring, represents a significant step in Sunderland’s effort to embrace self-driving technology.
Councillor Dorothy Trueman, the mayor of Sunderland, praised the modern SAMS shuttle as the start of a novel era for our residents and visitors.
SAMS ‘ arrival” signifies Sunderland and the wider region’s position as a forward-thinking location, leading the charge in adopting transformative technologies that enhance the lives of our community members.”
Ensuring Safety and Efficiency with Autonomous Shuttle Project
As the shuttle’s launch preparations progress, the focus shifts to operator training to properly oversee and manage the shuttle’s autonomous operations. As part of the city’s commitment to ensuring the safe and effective integration of self-driving technology into its transportation system, operator training is scheduled to begin in April.
The meticulous mapping of the shuttle’s route is a critical component of the preparation. Authorities aim to optimize SAMS ‘ navigation capabilities by producing a comprehensive and accurate map.
Three self-driving, zero-emission shuttles, created by Aurrigo, will serve as the SAMS project’s centerpiece, transferring passengers between the Sunderland Interchange, the University of Sunderland City Campus, and the Sunderland Royal Hospital. During the trial phase, which will also demonstrate a cyber-secure rural supervision protocol, safety operators will be on board.
Working with Sunderland City Council and other project partners to convert plans into practical solutions is a major step forth in research for self-driving vehicles operating on public roads, according to Richard Fairchild, COO of Aurrigo.
With the arrival of the SAMS shuttle, Sunderland is poised to set a precedent for other cities to follow in the search for smarter, more effective stability solutions.
Advancing Connectivity and Mobility with Smart City Initiatives
SAMS promises a glimpse into the future of urban mobility by operating along an intelligent transportation corridor made possible by 5G little cells along the route.
The SAMS initiative is a part of the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV ) Deployment competition and is supported by a £3 million government grant and industry contributions. The project, which is being led by Sunderland City Council in partnership with a number of partners, aims to highlight the potential of connected and automated mobility.
Towards a Connected and Sustainable Future in Urban Mobility
As we prepare to welcome the Sunderland Advanced Mobility Shuttle to our city streets, Chief Executive of Sunderland City Council Patrick Melia stated:” We are embarking on an interesting journey towards a more connected and sustainable future. In our efforts to embrace innovation and enhance the quality of life for our residents, SAMS represents a major step ahead. We are eager to see the beneficial effects of this self-driving shuttle on Sunderland’s industrial mobility.”
The SAMS shuttle’s launch marks the start of a tempting path toward a more connected and sustainable future for Sunderland and the surrounding area.
